Ceramics Marquee

DAVID & LOUISE SALSBURY

David and Louise work together in Loughborough, Leicestershire making and decorating
their earthenware tiles and pottery.Their training includes sculpture, ceramics and graphic design.  They met while working at the Fulham Pottery in London during the 1980s.In the mid 1990s they set up a workshop together making and decorating colourful earthenware pottery This was sold at Greenwich market and Merton Abbey Mills Sunday markets.  Craft fairs followed and specialist ceramic shows.  Relocation to larger premises
Prompted more work with tiles and a move away from direct selling towards making for selected craft shops and galleries.Their work has always been influenced by their surroundings – the vibrant colours of Brixton Market, the soft tones of the Leicestershire countryside and the fresh clear colours of the Devon seashore.David and Louise continue to make their distinctive pottery and tiles for galleries and shops as well as exhibiting at selected craft fairs and ceramics festivals including Potfest, Ceramics South East and Art in Clay.
Louise - My graphic design background has given me a strong sense of colour and surface pattern.  My tile panels use found objects from nature such as leaves and seed pod heads to produce impressions in soft clay. I like to capture the discarded and overlooked  to create a permanent record of its existence.
The resulting images are decorated using underglazes and lustres.  Sets of tiles are mounted in our own frames, made from reclaimed wood.

David -  I have always loved to draw.  My discovery of pigments that could be used to draw on the ceramic surface was a revelation.  I have developed a palette of colours that allow me to illustrate the surfaces of our pottery and tiles using washes and painted line.
Our pottery forms have always been kept simple to allow the decoration to be the main focus.
My imagery is taken from the natural world of the countryside and sea shore, featuring animals, birds and fish.
