British Morgan Horse Society

The Morgan tradition started when a man named Justin Morgan brought a young stallion to Vermont in the late 1700's. This sturdy young stallion named Figure, quickly gained a reputation as being able to out-pull, out-run and basically out-perform all the other horses of his time, regardless of their size or pedigree. It was sonn realised that direct descendants of Figure, who was referred to as the "Morgan" horse, all seemed to inherit his sturdy compact build, heart and stamina and versatility. Morgans soon became highly sought after because of their inherent ability to do anything and do it well. Morgan's became America's first recognised breed.

The British Morgan Society was founded in 1975 to promote the Morgan horse in Britian. There are around 700 registered Morgans in Britian and the BMHS is dedicated to promoting the versatility of the breed.

Shows are run throughout the year with Morgans shown in a large variety of classes at breed and open shows, being shown in-hand, ridden and driven.

Classes consist of four main groups

1. English Hunter - normal English style attire and tack. These horses can be shown plaited or with full mane and tail.

2. Saddle Seat - Traditional attire Kentucky jodhpurs, frock coat and saddle derby. Lane fox cut back saddles and full bridle with patent brow band nose bands in stable colours.

3. Western - Morgans compete in all forms of western riding and are still used on the working farms of America as well as shows.

4. Driving - shown in classes with traditional fine harness to America vehicles although Morgans compete successfully in FEI. Private BDS driving at non breed shows.

For those not interested in shows, the Morgan makes an excellent family horse, being just at home hacking and being your best friend.
